September 2024 Letter from WAR to our elected officials
Greetings, As you are aware, WAR has been actively working on restoring the lower Withlacoochee River for over 10 years now, and in the course of that endeavor we have gathered a great deal of information on the matter. During the last week of June we hosted a public meeting with the US Army Corps of Engineers in Inglis. During the course of that event one of the Corps representatives inquired about the condition of Lake Rousseau. A representative from the Southwest Florida Water Management District replied and described it as "Good." We wholeheartedly disagree with that assessment and provide the attached photos for your consideration. The photos were taken on 5 & 6 September 2024. We note as well that there are numerous documents developed by, or under contract to FDEP and SWFWMD which have contrary perspectives to "Good." One suggests the lake has a sediment accretion rate of about 1/4" per year, which is quite high. At this time the lake is approximately 115 years old and has never had a functional draw down, a circumstance which is perfectly contrary to reservoir management in the USA. For your information, the communities of Yankeetown and Inglis have forwarded a request to Congresswoman Cammack for funding of an engineering study to remediate the issues at hand. Best Regards, Dan Hilliard Acting President W.A.R., Inc.
